Carrickmines drew national attention during the construction of the M50 motorway when anti-roads protestors known as the Carrickminders established a camp in the region and forced Vincent Salafia to file legal challenges that resulted in a two-year delay in the M50’s completion. The protesters said that Carrickmines Castle’s underground ruins, an Anglo-Norman fort erected in the 12th century on the edge of the Pale, were of national significance. The majority of the excavated remains are still present but kept in the various buildings and tunnels that dot the junction. The project, which was eventually finished in August 2005, allegedly cost more money as a result of the action, according to Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.

Previously a rural area, Carrickmines is now a semi-rural suburban area. The M50 motorway divides the area northeast-southwest, with more established residential areas to the northeast and new retail parks, office buildings, housing schemes, and apartments to the southwest, including along Glenamuck Road.

• Shopping in Carrickmines

There is a mix of office and retail space in Carrickmines’ retail park, The Park Carrickmines. It was sold for €100 million in 2006 and it was reported to have collected the highest retail park rent in Ireland in 2014. The Sunday Times named it as the best-performing Irish retail park in 2015. 

• Carrickmines Public Transport

Northeast of the village is where you’ll find the park and ride at the Carrickmines Luas stop on the Green Line. Regular Go-Ahead Ireland 63 and 63A services that go between Dun Laoghaire and Kilternan also stop in Carrickmines to serve the area.

Originally, the Harcourt Street line of the Dublin and South Eastern Railway ran via the Carrickmines railway station. It started on July 10, 1854, and ended on January 1, 1959.
