Your Guide To Dalkey

Dalkey

  • Dalkey History

The primary village was established as a Viking settlement and developed into a bustling harbour during the Middle Ages. Although the region previously housed seven castles from the 15th and 16th centuries, it was stated in 1837 (in Samuel Lewis’s Topographical Dictionary of Ireland) that the ruins of three long-since-dismantled castles, one of which has been turned into a private residence, another into a store, and the third into a carpenter’s shop, provide startling evidence of their previous importance. Four of the region’s old castles have been completely destroyed.

  • Culture and Amenities

Both the Gaelic Athletic Association team Cuala CLG and the association football team Dalkey United have their headquarters in Hyde Park. Paul McGrath began his soccer career with Dalkey United. Peter Farrell, another international footballer from the town, was born there in the 1940s. The Dalkey Dashers, an athletics club, has been established. Kayaking lessons are offered in Bulloch, and Dalkey Rowing Club is headquartered at Coliemore Harbour. At Bulloch Harbour, Dalkey Sea Scouts maintain two vintage sailing vessels.

There are changing rooms for sea swimmers at Whiterock Beach and the Vico Bathing Area, both of which are accessible from Vico Road. It’s not far from the Joyce Tower to Sandycove Beach and the nearby “Forty Foot” bathing area.

Every year, the Dalkey Book Festival is a literary event that spans a weekend in mid-June. The festival is managed by David McWilliams and Sian Smyth as well as the Dalkey Business Group and several volunteers. The community also organises the Dalkey Lobster Festival, which “features local seafood and international jazz musicians,” in late August.

  • Dalkey Public Transport

The first commercial use of the atmospheric system of railway propulsion took place at the Dalkey Atmospheric station at Atmospheric Road (29 March 1844 to 12 April 1854).

On July 10, 1854, the modern Dalkey railway station was inaugurated. The DART electric rail system, which provides speedy transit to and from Dublin City Centre, serves the station. The train exits from a brief tunnel just south of Dalkey Station with cliff top views of Dalkey Island and Killiney Bay.

The region is connected to Dublin Airport by an Aircoach service that makes a stop at Hyde Road. The region is connected to the city centre and the neighbouring beach town of Dun Laoghaire by Go-Ahead Ireland and Dublin Bus services.
