Your Guide To Dundrum

Estate Agent

Dundrum, formerly a town in its own right (Irish: Dn Droma, the ridge fort), is an affluent neighbourhood of Dublin, Ireland. The location lies between Dublin 14 and Dublin 16 postal districts. The largest shopping centre in Ireland, the Dundrum Town Centre, is located in Dundrum.

History

The location of the old St. Nahi’s Church, which was built in the eighth century and still survives today, is one of the earliest references to the region. Taney, the earliest name for Dundrum, comes from Tigh Naithi, which means the residence or birthplace of Nath.

An early intact Flemish Redware jug from the 13th century was discovered during recent archaeological excavations conducted close to the church. These digs found three enclosures connected to the church, the oldest of which dates to the 6th century.

Taney is first mentioned in a document from St. Laurence O’Toole to Christchurch in 1178 as “half of Rathnahi,” and in a papal bull from Pope Alexander III to the same archbishop the following year as “Medietatem de Tignai.” The spelling was changed up to the middle of the sixteenth century.

More Recent Times

One of the first areas in Ireland to build a purpose-built shopping centre was Dundrum in 1971. (the first being in Stillorgan). On March 3, 2005, a considerably larger shopping centre opened immediately south of Dundrum. One of the largest theatres in Ireland is housed within the Dundrum Town Centre project, which debuted in early October 2005. Plans for the former shopping centre call for adding rooms for hotels, residences, and other stores. However, this has been delayed, and new tenants like Lidl, Classic Furniture and Mulvey’s of Dundrum have taken over the older retail spaces. The former Dundrum Shopping Center has recently adopted the name Dundrum Village Center.
