The Rathfarnham region has historically bordered Terenure to the north, Old Bawn to the west, and Churchtown to the east. It extends from the first range of the Dublin-Wicklow Mountains to the river Dodder.

 

It was formerly a frontier region dividing the English-populated lowlands from the “wild” mountain clans, then it became a country getaway for Dublin’s wealthy and the centre of early industrialization in the nineteenth century, and eventually, it became a location for unending suburban housing.

There are six schools in the area, St Marys BNS, Loreto High School, Loreto Primary, Gaelcholáiste an Phiarsaigh, Rathfarnham Parish National School and Educate Together Rathfarnham. All of these schools are well regarded and have a waiting list.

Rathfarnham is a tranquil neighbourhood with several well-regarded restaurants and public houses. Many of the restaurants have been in the area for many years and serve a wide range of cuisines. The area is well known for its Park, Bushy Park which often houses weekend markets.

The area is served by Dublin bus which has routes to Tallaght, UCD and Dublin City Centre. It is conveniently located near the Spawell Roundabout which offers easy access to the M50, and Tallaght Bypass which offers easy access to many key locations throughout Dublin.
